%X The application of vegetation indices is a way of understanding the vegetation cover in landscape studies, where the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is widely applied. The NDVI consists in the calculation of the reflectance in the red and near infrared electromagnetic frequencies. However to aim the reflectance values the user must convert digital number, applying a radiometric correction in satellite bands. This study evaluates if the radiometric correction is necessary and how the NDVI calculation could be optimized. For this purpose, bands of the TM, ETM and LISS-III optical sensors of the satellites Landsat 5, Landsat 7 and Resourcesat1-P6 respectively were used to obtain NDVI values with and without the radiometric correction, calculating the difference between them for each optical sensor. The results revealed a stable average and low standard deviation for all the tests. At last, this paper purposes an Abbreviated Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (ANDVI) which seems to be equivalent to the NDVI with radiometric correction and more easily evaluated. The results showed that the ANDVI is interesting and possible for substitute the radiometric correction process. It is hoped that it will come to a facilitation of the methodology of calculation of NDVI, thus enhancing its practical applications.
